The John H. McDonald awards recognize excellence in student journalism across Canada. This year, The Ubyssey took home the awards for investigative reporting and cover of the year as well as received six other nominations.


Starting this past New Year, BC Liquor in Wesbrook Village is closing two hours earlier than normal. Instead of being open until 9 p.m. from Monday through Saturday, they are now closing at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.


The most lovable vending machine — also known as “The Hugging Coca Cola Machine” — is back at UBC. Standing tall in the SRC is Coca Cola’s signature red and white text with the words “Hug Me” front and centre. It’s kind of hard to miss.


If you're interested in helping out Canadians in need of blood, UBC Blood for Life Club is hosting a mobile blood donation clinic tomorrow, January 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Totem Park's ballroom.


I was warned countless times not to do graduate school. “It won’t lead anywhere.” “You’ll never get a job.” “You won’t make any money.” “You will be miserable.” I went for it anyway. And I have no regrets so far.


As far as I’m concerned, the Western Hemisphere should create our own language just to stick it to the Old World. I say this not only on behalf of Americans in Canada, but Canadians in America, Brazilians in Mexico, Chileans in Québec and so on.
