Third-year economics student Ian Sapollnik is running for re-election after serving one term as arts student senator in the UBC Vancouver Senate, making it his third campaign for Senate since he first ran in 2015.
Jakob Gattinger, a third-year mining engineering student, is running to be one of five student senators-at-large in the UBC Vancouver Senate with a platform focused on mental health, a commitment to diversity and tuition consultation concerns.

In a race of six candidates, Kevin Doering, Jakob Gattinger, Daniel Lam, Ian Sapollnik and Simran Brar have secured the five senator-at-large positions on the student caucus of the UBC Vancouver Senate.
AMS VP External Kathleen Simpson emphasized that the SIS confirmed that many students are also worried about the high costs associated with staying in Vancouver after graduation as well as the cost of post-secondary education itself.
Three candidates for the Vancouver-Point Grey riding came to the Nest Thursday evening for a debate focused on student issues. The Ubyssey moderated the debate and has since checked the veracity of some of the candidates' claims.
“People are amazing once you get them out of their idiotic ideological presuppositions,” said Peterson to a crowd of dozens at the event. “Let’s be a bit appreciative of the political distribution and let’s understand that you need to communicate."
“The next time someone tells me that one vote won’t count, I’m going to say, ‘Oh, let me tell you a story,’” said Chris Hakim, who lost the AUS VP External race by one vote. “I know that it does first-hand.”
While Gonick’s mother has not yet arrived in Vancouver, Gallegos Marín stressed that the gathering and fundraiser are about spreading the word and maintaining morale among his friends and family both in Vancouver and Ecuador.
“We’re trying to break down the wall between the ivory tower and the broader political community and to recognize that there is a role for thinking about politics as a practice — not just as theory,” said Cameron.
