A program fee attached to the proposed biomedical undergraduate program has some worried that the university is setting a precedent that circumvents the "spirit" of the 2 per cent domestic tuition cap.

Three candidates for the Vancouver-Point Grey riding came to the Nest Thursday evening for a debate focused on student issues. The Ubyssey moderated the debate and has since checked the veracity of some of the candidates' claims.

“This event is linked to the fact that we are having a BDS campaign but it is first and foremost meant to really give an insight for people as to what it means to be under siege in Gaza,“ said Emma Russo at the event.

The referendum was originally supposed to be held earlier — either during AMS elections or the last week of March — but was postponed after a court order was secured by Logan Presch, a UBC student, and his legal representation.

The delay was approved with the intention of allowing time to implement feedback from the Watson Group, governance consultants recently hired by the Board, in order to ensure sufficient consideration of all relevant best practice guidelines.

Max Holmes, this year’s elections administrator (EA), attributes the increase mostly to a change in the allocation of the elections’ committees’ $3,500 advertising budget to be more focused on getting people to vote rather than attend events.

One of them will establish a fee that would fund the construction of a student fitness and recreation building on campus. Another will allow the AMS to sell up to four pieces of art from their collection.

Ehrenholz, although he initially campaigned as a joke candidate, was the only one who had previously worked in student government. His win today marks the first time that a joke candidate has won the AMS presidency.

James Cohen, a candidate for the AMS presidency, has been suspended from using Facebook Messenger for the purpose of his campaign for 24 hours after one of his volunteers engaged in “slate-like behaviour.”

There are five candidates for president in this year’s AMS Elections. In this debate, candidates were questioned about their lack of experience, the sexual assault policy — for the second time — and the lack of diversity in this year’s elections.
