All of UBC and UBC Okanagan's academic and non-academic discipline reports from 1996-2014 are available online for your perusal (thanks to /u/yvery for reminding me!). They range from your standard forged medical note to elaborate, ostentatious and sometimes horrifically stupid ideas.
In our first edition, we looked at some highlights from the most recent four years. Volume 2 went back to ’06. This time, we're taking it to the turn of the century. George W. Bush was elected. American Beauty won best picture. Y2K ravaged the earth. Many things were different — university students' affinity for cheating was not. Let's dive in.
2000/01
A student assaulted an RCMP officer with pepper spray while the officer was assisting UBC security with a student control problem.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand and a requirement that the student seek counselling.
A student gained admission to a faculty program by using false transcripts from two institutions, neither of which the student attended.
Discipline: Denial on a permanent basis of eligibility to graduate from the program and a permanent notation on the transcript.
A student used a friend to impersonate them and write their final examination.
Discipline: A mark of zero in the course and a suspension from the university for 12 months.
A student was drunk and entered a private room in a campus building without proper cause.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand.
A student trespassed onto university property, jumped on a vehicle, opened the doors of other vehicles in the enclosed area and attempted to evade campus security.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand.
A student improperly entered the UBC vehicle security compound and attempted to remove a vehicle from that area without paying the release cost.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand.
A student trespassed onto university property that was under construction and attempted to evade campus security.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand.
A student submitted a quiz using a false name and ID and subsequently claimed they were absent on the date the exam was written, and altered an answer on a midterm when it was returned for inspection and then requested a grade re-evaluation.
Discipline: A mark of zero on the quiz and, in the special circumstances, no change of mark for the midterm exam, and a suspension from the university for eight months.
A student made improper and inappropriate use of a course web page during an assignment.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand and a requirement that the student complete a series of educational sessions concerned with awareness and sensitivity issues related to the misconduct.
2001/02
A student was present and in an intoxicated state while in the company of three other students on top of a university parkade when a plastic road barricade was thrown from that location onto the roadway below.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand.
A student posted improper and unacceptable remarks on a course electronic Bulletin Board.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand and the requirement that the student undertake a prescribed series of education sessions concerned with awareness and sensitivity issues related to the misconduct.
A student plagiarized 10 assignments in a course.
Discipline: A mark of zero in the course and a suspension from the university for 12 months.
A student failed to submit their final examination for a course, although the student did sit the exam.
Discipline: A mark of zero in the course and a suspension from the university for 12 months.
A student drove an impounded vehicle out of the campus security compound without paying the appropriate citation and towing fees and, in the process, recklessly threatened the well-being of a person acting for the university in the course of an official duty.
Discipline: A suspension from the university for 12 months.
A student surreptitiously administered a noxious substance to another student while tutoring/studying with the student for an upcoming midterm.
Discipline: Expulsion from the university and a permanent record of the disciplinary action entered on the student’s transcript.
A group of students set fire to a recycling bin/dumpster on campus (no crime in trying to visualize your university career).
Discipline: A suspension from the university for four months and reimbursement to the university for the damage/replacement cost of the recycling bin.
A student wrote a threatening note in an examination booklet.
Discipline: A suspension from the university for 11 months.
2002/03
A student requested to have their undergraduate degree, which was conferred years earlier, rescinded by the university due to their academic misconduct during their last two academic years. In particular, the student submitted essays and dissertations written by someone else in a number of courses.
Discipline: A mark of zero in all of the courses with the transcript being amended accordingly and the degree be annulled.
A student was intoxicated and acted in an inappropriate manner in front of a campus building and failed to show respect to the campus security personnel.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand.
A student was verbally abusive towards a professor, struck the professor’s cabinet with their fist, and threatened and spat at a teaching assistant.
Discipline: A letter of severe reprimand.
2003/04
A student retained their quiz when they were supposed to hand it back in class, and then marked their own quiz and submitted it during the next class for grade recording.
Discipline: Transcript to be changed to reflect an “F” in the course and a suspension from the university for four months.
A student committed academic misconduct when they sent an email purporting to come from their instructor that accused another student of misconduct in a course. Further, the student allegedly forged a letter of cancellation from a university office purporting to cancel their own registration in a course.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand for sending the email. With respect to the forged letter, the allegation could not be substantiated due to the lack of clear and convincing evidence.
A student sent a highly offensive email to a UBC undergraduate office.
Discipline: A suspension from the university for four months.
2004/05
A student entered a private UBC residence building without authorization or invitation, discharged fire safety equipment, rendering it unavailable for use in case of an emergency, used a water fire extinguisher to attack two residents, and was involved in a physical altercation with one resident.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand.
A student allegedly offered money to another student in order to join their study group for a course. (What's the over/under on this being Sauder?)
Outcome: Allegation dismissed.
A student cheated in a final exam when they stole another student’s exam paper from the room, erased the other student’s name from the cover page, inserted their own name, replaced the cover page of the other student’s exam with their cover page and submitted the other student’s exam as their own.
Discipline: A mark of zero in the course and a suspension from the university for 16 months.
A student took pictures of their examination when reviewing their completed and marked exam, and then denied that they had done so and that they had no intention of using the pictures for an improper purpose.
Discipline: A letter of reprimand.
