Home in five moments

1. Home could be
The stretch of the Trans-Canada
That runs between Calgary and Banff,
With the velvet prairie in the foreground
And the grey shadow of the mountains at my back.

2. Home could be
A parking lot in Ottawa
Where I saw my brother for the first time
After he left for school,
And I cried so hard that I couldn’t breathe.

3. Home could be
The upright grand piano in my best friend’s living room
With the weak November sunlight glinting off of ivory keys
As her fingertips drew out the tune
Of whatever sonata she’d learned that week.

4. Home could be
A cliff overlooking the sea
Where the wind sung so loud
You couldn’t hear yourself think
And the sun setting in the west turned the water to fire.

5. Home could be
Anywhere I see my mother,
My brother, my friends.
Any place in the world where for even a moment,
I feel like I can breathe.
