Council appoints committee members and hears updates

Last night, AMS Council met to pass a code change, appoint councillors to committees and hear executive updates.

Here’s what you might’ve missed.

You get an appointment, you get an appointment...

A motion was presented to reduce the number of members on the Executive Performance and Accountability Committee from seven to five.

Councillor Riley Huntley said "this is a case of less is more. Essentially, we're going to make sure that the size of the committee facilitate[s] robust discussion and [is] able to meet quickly to discuss the concerns of the executive.”

The motion passed.

Council also went in-camera briefly to discuss the appointment of a Senator for Dentistry. The recommended candidate will be officially voted in at the next Senate meeting on September 18.

The majority of Council was spent appointing councillors to the seven committees, as well as appointing chairs for the committees.

Business as usual

Council also heard updates from the executives. VP AUA Drédyn Fontana said his office had been working with the Director of the Centre for Accessibility to improve file management software and create an online booking portal.

“Surprise, surprise, the Accessibility Centre is not super accessible, so [we’re] working on that with the director,” said Fontana.

VP External Ayesha Irfan said her office is preparing for the provincial election.

She said they have finalized logistics for the leadership forum the AMS will be hosting and have entered into party platform negotiations with all three major parties.

“One of the things that I touched on earlier was that this is a collaboration, so we're working with … schools across the province [to submit] pre-recorded questions that reflect their issues regarding post-secondary students in their respective writings in areas,” said Irfan.

Irfan also said there had been issues with students loading their UPass at the beginning of this month. She said it was a technical error and “the issue is now resolved, and that's all that matters.”
