‘The entire Jewish community is grieving’: Hillel BC to host vigil in solidarity with Pittsburgh

On Saturday morning, a mass shooting took place inside the Tree of Life Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Today, Hillel BC is hosting a vigil for all UBC community members to pay their respects to those killed and show their solidarity with those affected.

“The entire Jewish community is grieving and standing shoulder to shoulder with Pittsburgh,” reads the event’s note.

On October 27, an armed gunman later identified as 46-year-old Pittsburgh resident Robert Bowers killed 11 worshippers during a baby-naming ceremony before surrendering to police. It was one of the deadliest attacks on the Jewish Community in the US history.

“We are deeply saddened by the horrific anti-Semitic attack that occurred during morning Shabbat services at the Tree of Life congregation in Pittsburgh on October 27, 2018,” said Hillel BC Executive Director Samuel Heller.

The vigil will begin at 4 p.m. today and is open to all community members.

“We are grateful for the support we have received from the UBC community and beyond, and invite all those who oppose violence and bigotry to join us in honouring life and standing against hate,” Heller said.
