Eshana Bhangu wins crowded race for AMS president

Eshana Bhangu will be your next AMS president.

Bhangu — who currently serves as the AMS VP academic and university affairs — beat out fellow exec VP External Saad Shoaib, newcomers Wesley Choi, Sydney Harakal and Tate Kaufman, and joke candidates The Pan and Remy the Rat.

This year’s race for president was particularly crowded after departing President Cole Evans won reelection uncontested last year.

Bhangu ran on a platform of advocating for affordable housing and education; centring social justice and equity in AMS operations; increasing mental health and harm reduction services; creating a culture of accountability; and supporting international students.

Bhangu said she was “beyond the fucking moon” after the results were announced.

When asked what the first thing she was going to do as president, Bhangu said “kick some ass.”

“We’re ready for it!”

Her term starts on May 1.
