The man found dead on the lawn of UBC president Arvind Gupta has been identified as Roderick Cortner.
B.C. Coroner's office spokesperson Barb McLintock said they identified Cortner earlier this week and are trying to determine how he died and why he was on the property of the Norman Mackenzie House.
"Until we knew who he was it was very hard to start asking the other questions…. Now we can start working on some of those other questions," said McLintock.
Cortner was found dead at the Norman Mackenzie House on April 9. RCMP issued a release that day saying they deemed the death ‘suspicious’ and would issue a media release once they determined the cause of death. On Friday, April 24, UBC RCMP spokesperson Drew Grainger said they don't believe Cortner's death is suspicious and they have turned the investigation over to the Coroner's office.
The Vancouver Police Department issued a release saying Cortner was missing on April 6. On April 16, the VPD put out a release saying the 66-year-old man was found dead and they did not suspect foul play.
According to the VPD, Cortner was last seen April 5 around 4:30 a.m. downtown near East Cordova and Gore.
