One study had students evaluate online courses with randomized male or female names. Almost invariably, students rated the male names higher than the female names, regardless of the actual gender of the professor.
The AMS stressed during consultations that interest on student loans means penalizes students from lower-income backgrounds.
"We understand that tuition is critical to the university’s function — it represents a majority of the revenues in our discretionary operating budget. But we disagree with this proposal on several grounds."

The university is continuing to create a government business enterprise (GBE), an entirely separate trust that would let UBC circumvent the caps of provincial borrowing and build student housing at an accelerated rate.
UBC is one of the only universities in Canada that does not have a policy requiring professors to provide a syllabus for their courses — but after many years of deliberation in the Senate, that may change.

In partnership with the AMS, an alumni-led company is bringing “smart lockers” onto campus to improve the commuter experience.
The BoG has outlined a number of key policies that are either slated for or already being actively reviewed. These include reworking how UBC accommodates students with disabilities, the school’s rules around discrimination and harassment, and the legal status of cannabis on campus.
An AMS submission to a recent Board of Governors committee meeting lobbied the university to start reviewing its sexual misconduct policy (Policy 131) in fall 2019.
“Insofar as assessing teaching effectiveness is concerned -- especially in the context of tenure and promotion -- SETs are imperfect at best and downright biased and unreliable at worst,” reads the decision.
“The ultimate goal for the simulation is to enhance the education experience for the students, afford them the opportunities that … they might not get before they are out in the workforce," said Skoretz.
“When you look at the other costs [of education] such as the rising cost of housing, the rising cost of tuition, textbook costs are just yet another burden,” said AMS VP Academic and University Affairs Max Holmes.
