“In the past few years, more students live on campus all-year round,” said Parr. “That attracts the food spots, as before we had a lot of commuter students, so the food spots had only work during the school year.”
President of the UBC Faculty Association (FA), Mark Mac Lean, will be stepping down from his role as of June 30, 2017. Instead, he will be further pursuing his academic role within the university as a faculty member and head of the math department.
According to an email sent out to creative writing students this morning, interviews have been scheduled with three finalists for the position of chair of the department. This person will fill the role that Galloway left vacant when he was fired.
Several referendum questions were also announced as officially being on the elections ballot. This is not a complete list, as the deadline to submit completed referendum petitions (with 1,000 student signatures) is February 24.
The Board also voted to increase investment in the fund by $5 million per year for a period of three years, bringing the total investment fund to $25 million. The original investment was a $10 million contribution from the Trek endowment.
The Microsoft-funded “Cascadia Urban Analytics Cooperative” is a joint research venture between the universities that will involve students, community members and researchers to address issues faced by growing cities in the Pacific Northwest.
In a recent interview with The Vancouver Sun, UBC President Santa Ono expressed a drive to see UBC rise from its current top-40 standing in the global universities list to the top 20. The Ubyssey spoke with Ono to find out how he hopes to do so.
“They try to rush you through [when it’s busy] so you don’t want to be the person who holds up the line by asking for the receipt. Unless you notice it on the spot with a receipt, there’s no way for you to complain and get your money back.”
“Advocating for improved funding to post-secondary education remains a priority for the AMS and we will be looking for all BC political parties to make this a priority in the May provincial elections,” wrote AMS VP External Kathleen Simpson.
SASC has also formed a relationship with UBC Hospital in order to allow survivors to have their forensic exams done on campus. This relationship was formed so the SASC could provide accompaniment to the hospital and additional support for survivors.
Being the only VP Academic candidate, Daniel Lam took the stage in the first AMS elections debate today unopposed. Lam is a current student senator at large with two years of both AMS Council and undergraduate society council experience.
There are three people vying for the position of AMS President this year — Jesse Hooton, James Cohen and Sugar Brewer — and two joke candidates, Julian “The Hooligan” Del Balso and the Cairn, all with very different platforms.
This year’s candidates for VP External, Sally Lin and Dario Garousian, attended this afternoon’s debate in the Lev Burkhan Theatre from 2 – 4:30 p.m. They discussed issues ranging from student engagement to transit.
James Cohen, who is running for president, and Dario Garousian, who is running for VP External, have violated the AMS Elections Procedures and Handbook. Both candidates committed two violations after their first official campaign warning.
